Chapter 23 Wool Lining
Chapter 23 Wool Lining
For ten days, Bourne has remained unconscious.
Natalie asked Mick, "Will he pull through?"
Mick stared at Natalie for a moment, then answered:
"I don't know. I have done everything I can, but when you brought him here, his wounds were already festering and rotting. I cut away the necrotic flesh from his body and stitched the skin back together. As for his fate, only God knows."
Mick is the master of this village, and I heard he is a knight.
Ten days ago, the traveling merchant Hogan brought Natalie and Byrne here, and the kind old lord took them in.
Mick healed Bourne and made room for Natalie and Bourne, allowing them to stay in the village.
These days, Natalie either stays by Bourne's side or goes to the village church to pray for Bourne before the statue of God.
Natalie understood that Byrne was injured while protecting her.
Fearing that Natalie would worry or miss the opportunity to escape, he stubbornly concealed his injuries.
Even assuming Bourne still had his armor and sword, he wouldn't have been injured at all.
However, his weapons were confiscated by a passing officer in order to protect Natalie.
Therefore, Natalie felt guilty, but she didn't like that feeling.
So she vowed to keep Bourne alive.
Natalie couldn't remember what they talked about during their last conversation.
However, Bourne would occasionally make a sound, weakly uttering a few words.
Among them was the name of Natalie's father, whom Byrne referred to as "Lord Lines".
"Miss" likely refers to Natalie, but there are other ambiguous terms like "knight," "honor," "mission," and "I must."
Whenever Natalie heard Bourne speak, regardless of whether she understood what he meant, she would try to talk to him, but unfortunately Bourne never responded.
The village aunties also helped take care of Bourne, but Bourne's high fever persisted and his complexion became increasingly pale.
If this continues, Bourne will really die.
Natalie pleaded with Mick:
"Old sir, please, you must save him."
"It's a miracle that he's still alive after his wound became infected and inflamed; I'm even a little amazed by his vitality."
"Since he's so resilient, perhaps if we do something more for him, he can pull through!"
Mick shook his head:
"I don't have that skill. What I did for him was just the kind of emergency treatment that anyone who has been on the battlefield knows. If you really want to save him, you should take him to see a doctor. There's a town to the north where people from the village go to get medical treatment when they get sick."
Natalie couldn't accept the offer. They had killed soldiers in other cities, and nearby towns would likely join the manhunt. Her presence with Bourne would probably arouse suspicion.
Moreover, both Natalie and Bourne are wanted criminals in the kingdom.
Natalie lowered her head: "I don't want him to leave here."
The room fell silent for a moment until Mick spoke:
"As a knight, I have experienced many wars and seen countless comrades fall beside me, so I know how badly he is wounded. I must tell you, at this moment, giving him a quick death may be the only mercy."
"No, I must save him!"
Natalie didn't hesitate at all and retorted loudly.
"Then tell me, why did you save him?"
Because I owe him… but Natalie knew it in her heart… but I couldn’t answer like that.
"Because we are father and son."
"Um?"
Mick's face was full of doubt.
Natalie had no choice but to continue lying:
"Yes, he really is my father."
"I can't refute that, but..."
Mick paused, squinting as he carefully observed Natalie.
"Hey! You're a girl, right?"
Natalie's cold-blooded rebellion.
